This Section was established in 1980 and has contributed significantly to extension education activities of the Institute. It has impacted farmers and other stakeholders through training of poultry farmers/entrepreneurs, consultancy in poultry value-chain, participation in exhibitions, organizing Farm Schools on AIR, off-farm technology assessment, supply of improved germplasms, and publication of books and bulletins. The scientists of this section are also engaged in research and post-graduate teaching.
Research Activities & Achievements
On-going project: Poultry Rearing Practices at High Altitude
Evaluation of improved diversified poultry germplasm viz. Turkey Virat, CARIBRO Dhanaraja, CARI Sonali and CARI Priya at Mukteshwar in Kumaon region (altitude 2000 metres) has been carried out to provide self-employment, household income and nutritional security through poultry farming. Encouraging results have been obtained, and some field-tested germplasms have helped establish about 15 small-scale poultry units in the region.
Post-Graduate Teaching
Scientists of the section are also involved in post-graduate teaching and guiding students of the IVRI Deemed University.
Extension Education Activities
- Farmers’ training: Training for poultry farmers, entrepreneurs, unemployed youth, army personnel, State AH department, ATMA, NABARD, etc. on poultry farm management.
- Technology assessment and refinement: Technical guidance in Bareilly district; evaluation of CARI commercial broiler (CARIBRO Dhanraja) supplied to farmers.
- State poultry development plans: Developed plans for Arunachal Pradesh and Tripura.
- Projects for defence: Complete project on layer and quail to ARU, Ministry of Defence, Almora for high-altitude jawans.
- Supply of commercial germplasm: Supplied over 10 lakh improved broiler germplasms to farmers.
- Consultancy services: Provided to poultry farmers, defence organizations, and State Governments via post/email/phone and in-person on poultry farming across the country.
- Kukkut Vigyan Mela & exhibitions: Organized 28 Kukkut Vigyan Melas in U.P., Delhi, Odisha, and participated in 65 agricultural exhibitions across the country.
- Mass media communication: 12 Farm Schools in collaboration with AIR, Rampur and Bareilly (~3600 participants); press releases, radio talks, and advertisements on poultry farming.
- Publications: Institute Annual Report, Quarterly Newsletter, Books, Extension Bulletins on poultry production and processing, distributed free or at reasonable prices.
